Heures à l'usage de Rome - Hore virginis intemerate secūdum - Lot 34
Heures à l'usage de Rome - Hore virginis intemerate secūdum usum Romane ecclesie. [Paris, Guillaume Le Rouge, circa 1510]. In-8, 9.2 x 15.8 cm, 107 ff. out of 112 ([a]-hviii, A-Fviii, Giv, lacking: Bi, Dvi, Fi, Fvii & Fviii), antique brown calf binding, double gilt fillet in border and gilt arma Christi in center of boards, ribbed spine decorated with cold fillets and gilt motifs, gilt edges. Printed copy on vellum skin, colored, of a very rare Parisian book of hours. Beautifully printed in red and black italics. The woodcut illustration includes a disc for the Sunday letter, 11 scenes (out of 12), with the zodiac, for each month, 4 figures of the evangelists, the arrest of Christ, all mid-page; 11 scenes from the life of the Virgin, a second representation of the Annunciation, Christ blessing King David, a damned man, and a saint praying for the souls in purgatory, all two-thirds page, and 24 figures of saints mid-page. The copy was described in 1896 by H. Monceaux in Les Le Rouge de Chablis: "This copy is incomplete of the last six ff. [sic, for pages] and a calendar leaf (February); several other ff. are torn. In addition, the engravings have been covered by badly drawn gouaches, several of which are damaged. Large and small ornate letters, rubricated and gilt". "The rarity of this edition" leads Monceaux to list the known copies. In addition to this one, he lists one at the BnF (vellum 2847), one at Chantilly and two on the market (Firmin-Didot [incomplete] and Maglione sales ["Édition extrêmement rare"]). There are also two other incomplete copies: one at the Newberry Library and the other on the market in 2007. Incomplete by 5 leaves, f. aiii has been cut off mid-page to extract the February wood. Old angular mending to the title leaf and to the leaves of the first 3 quires. Title soiled with printer's mark fleur-de-lys overlaid in brown ink. Marginal stain on second leaf. Tears not missing on ff. aiv-vi. All woodcuts have been painted in an old-fashioned manner, as have the initials. Several paintings are rubbed. Binding rubbed. Upper spine split, covers and lower spine roughly restored. Early wetstamp and signature Stanislas de St Germain in ink on title (probably Stanislas Gaillard de Saint-Germain, 1816-1852, archaeologist, historian of liturgical music and musician). Monceau 58 (pp. 161-164) - Lacombe 210 - Chantilly. Le cabinet des livres. Prints prior to mid-sixteenth century 923. Expert: Cédric and Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
