Attributed to Pierre ANDRIEU (1821–1892) - Lot 4
Attributed to Pierre ANDRIEU (1821–1892) Portrait of a young woman in profile Graphite drawing, red “E.D.” stamp at the bottom near the center. (Pinholes). 13.9 x 12.5 cm (the sheet) Bears the stamp of Delacroix’s studio, known as the “Andrieu stamp.” This refers to the painter Pierre Andrieu (1821–1892), the student and loyal collaborator of Eugène Delacroix, who bequeathed to him, among other things, his original drawings for the Salon de la Paix at the Hôtel de Ville (a work that was destroyed), plus 15,000 francs, as well as sketches of the chapel at the Church of St. Sulpice, a reclining lion, etc. Andrieu kept this legacy throughout his life; he also acquired, at Delacroix’s estate sale, numerous other sketches by his master. After his death, his heirs—presumably acting in good faith—had a new stamp made (formerly L.838), which was then affixed to drawings by Andrieu that had been mistakenly identified as Delacroix works, as well as to genuine Delacroix works that had been mixed in with the Andrieu pieces.*
