MATTHIOLE (Pierre André). Commentaries by Mr. Pierre André M - Lot 30
MATTHIOLE (Pierre André). Commentaries by Mr. Pierre André Matthiole, a physician from Senois, on the six books of Ped. Dioscorides Anazarbeen on medicinal substances, revised and expanded in over a thousand places by the author himself, and enriched for the third time with a large number of portraits, plants, and animals drawn from life, more so than in previous editions… Lyon, Guillaume Rouillé, 1572. Folio, 68 ff., 820 pp., 11 ff. (†6, ††6, 6, 6, 4, ★-★★★★★★6, ★★★★★★★4, A-Z6, Aa-Zz6, AA-XX6, YY8, ZZ6, AAA6), later binding in beige vellum, plain, unmarked spine.
First edition of the first complete French translation, by Jean des Moulins, of Mattioli’s Commentaries on Dioscorides’ *De materia medica*. It is considerably expanded compared to previous editions.
Illustrated with several hundred woodcut figures of plants and animals within the text, and a portrait of the author, woodcut on the title page, historically colored.
A fine copy, from the libraries of Abbé Jean Barrin de la Galissonnière (1640–1718), a man of letters, vicar general of the Diocese of Nantes, and later from the natural history collection of Gilbert Dufaux (dry seal on the title page and p. 39). A few old handwritten annotations on the title page and in the margins. Fading of the color. A few ink stains, some of them significant. Corner losses on the first two quires and pp. 685–686, roughly mended.
Signature cut off at the top of the title page, with minor damage to the text, roughly repaired.
