Customary Law of the Poitou Region, Revised, Published, and - Lot 12
Customary Law of the Poitou Region, Revised, Published, and Enforced as Law in the Said Region in the Year 1513… Poitiers, Enguilbert de Marnef, 1524. 87 + [1] ff. ([A]-L8).
Bound together with:
Extract from all the royal ordinances from which one may derive assistance and which are necessary for those who frequent the royal courts and appear before the parliaments… Poitiers, Jehan le Gros, Pierre Gachon, 1519. 33 ff. (incorrectly numbered XXXII) + [7] ff. ([A]-D8, E4, A4).
Two works in one Gothic in-8 volume, with 26 and 28 lines per page, 9.7 x 14.3 cm, contemporary binding in light tanned leather, unmarked spine with three raised bands, traces of fastenings.
A rare Gothic edition of the customs of Poitou, based on the one published by the renowned publisher Marnef in 1521.
Pelican mark on the title page, printed in red and black. Beautiful woodcuts featuring the arms of France at the end of the table of contents and on the two title pages of the final parts of the *Extraict*. A fine mark by Pierre Gachon at the end of the penultimate part of the *Extraict*. Initials on a black background.
A very fine copy in its original binding, annotated in ink in the margins—likely by several hands in the 16th century—with finger marks and vertical lines, as well as underlined phrases. Title page soiled; a few minor stains. Leather-covered boards, small losses and wormholes in the binding. Top of the spine torn off.
