Histoires prodigieuses extraictes de plusieurs fameux autheu - Lot 35
Histoires prodigieuses extraictes de plusieurs fameux autheurs... Paris, veuve Guillaume Cavellat, 1598-1597-1598. 6 volumes in 3 vols. in-16, 7.5 x 11.5 cm, [10] + 191 + [3] ff. (A-Z8, Aa-Bb8, Cc4) & 120 pp.., 2 ff. (of 3), [1 blank missing] (A-H8) & 372 pp. (Aa-Zz8, Aaa4) & 80 pp. 2 ff. (A-E8, B2) & 160 pp. (A-K8) & 92 pp. 1 f., [1 blank missing], one folded plate (A-F8), 18th-century tan calf binding, spines decorated with gilded faux-nerfs and motifs. Good Parisian edition of this highly successful work. Drawn from various ancient and modern texts, these stories are collected and adapted by both Catholic and Protestant authors: Pierre Boaistuau dit Launay, Claude de Tesserant, François de Belleforest, Rodolphe Hoyer, Arnaud Sorbin and Jean de Marconville (or perhaps the astrologer Jean de Montlyard), under the signature I.D.M. Visions, miracles, apparitions, diabolical possessions, extraordinary meteorological phenomena, signs in the sky, witchcraft, monstrous births and fantastic animals form the background. With long passages on Luther's life. Illustrated with 107 woodcut vignettes, some repeated. The last volume is complete with the woodcut fold-out plate of the knife that remained in a young girl's body for a year, which is often missing. Very good condition. One leaf with typographical mark (end of volume II) and two blank leaves (end of volumes II and VI) are missing. The table of Volume IV (2 ff.) is bound at the end of Volume VI.
