HOURS - Île-de-France, 15th century. Manuscript in Latin and - Lot 32
HOURS - Île-de-France, 15th century. Manuscript in Latin and French, in-8, 13 x 17.8 cm, 16 lines per page, calligraphed in Gothic script in brown and red ink on parchment, 136 (of 137?) + 1 + 6 + 8 (of 11?) ff. or 151 ff. modern ivory vellum binding, smooth muted spine. Livre d'heures à l'usage de Paris, containing 5 large miniatures (6 x 8.5 cm approx.) in gilded borders with blue and pink baguettes with white highlights: Annunciation to the shepherds (f. 54 v°), crucifixion with the Virgin and S. John (f. 83 r°), funeral celebration (f. 90 r°), Virgin and Child (f. 129 r°) and Risen Christ raising the dead from limbo (f. 134 r°), on a gold, red and blue checkered background (except for the first). Ten large ornate initials (3 to 4 lines high) in gold or painted pink or blue with white highlights and colored foliage on gold backgrounds. Numerous small initials 1 to 2 lines high in gold on a blue or pink background with white highlights. End lines painted in pink, blue and gold with white highlights. Foliage borders in black ink painted in pink, blue and gold with white highlights. The work includes a 12-f. calendar in French, listing the saints of the Paris diocese: Denis, Leu et Gilles, Cloud, Germain, Landry, Botulfus, Séverin, Geneviève, etc.; Gospel pericopes (ff. 13 r°-17 r°); the hours, lauds and matins of the Virgin (ff. 17 v°-68 r°); penitential psalms (ff. 70 r°-78 v°, incomplete first leaf) followed by the litany of saints (ff. 79 r°-82 r°); the office of the dead and other prayers, all in Latin with at least one title in French; Les quinze joies de la Vierge Marie (ff. 129 r°-133 v°) and intercessions au Seigneur (ff. 134 r°-137 r°), in French. Prayers and devotional texts in brown ink, with a few initials (3 in red ink) and highlights in yellow paint (ff. 137 r°-143 v°) follow on undecorated leaves, in tight handwriting by several hands. Following this are 8 shorter-margin ff., at around 20 lines per page, calligraphed in round Gothic script in brown and red ink, in Latin with French titles, of orations (appears incomplete on the first, third and penultimate leaves). The missing f. 69 has been replaced by a leaf on which are copied, in two different hands, prayers in Latin on the recto and in French on the verso. Some rubbing with small loss of pictorial surface (notably to the painting of the crucifixion, to the page of the painting of the office of the dead and to the robe of the risen Christ), some staining and soiling, notably to the recto of the first folio (rubbed), to f. 69 and to the verso of the last folio. From verso of f. 115 to verso of f. 117, the initials and line ends have not been painted. A very good, unmarked copy, sold on the Paris market between the wars. Joints partly split.
