CONVULTIONNAIRES - Table des lettres, visions et prières de - Lot 14
CONVULTIONNAIRES - Table des lettres, visions et prières de la sr de Ste Brigide [de 1741 à 1765]. Manuscript calligraphed in brown ink on laid paper, in-8, 16 x 21 cm, 164 pages, one blank, paperback. Important, detailed diary of the almost daily visions of Catherine-Françoise Moreau (b. 1715), religious sister of Sainte Brigide, famous nun and convulsionary at the Hôtel-Dieu de Paris, disciple of Fr. Michel Pinel (called "son papa" in the manuscript), who left the oratorians in 1746 to become "premier pontife de l'OEuvre", a dissident group of Catholics nicknamed the "Pinelists". The text also recounts the beatings and tortures endured by the sister as part of the "relief" intended to take upon herself the sufferings of the Church and prove the efficacy of grace. Each year ends with a table of visions by saint or personage who appeared, and by theme. It sometimes includes the dates of "penances". There are several examples of these manuscripts, probably copied by witnesses and disciples and intended for the clandestine propagation of the memory and work of the convulsionaries at the end of the 18th century. A fine document, in very legible handwriting, perfectly preserved. A few contemporary erasures and additions. Expert : Cédric et Ithier de FOUGEROLLE
