Antonio Caballero y Fernández de Rodas (1816-1876) : One of his first battles was the First Carlist War, where he immediately attracted the attention of his superiors. In 1854, he took part in the Vicalvarada uprising and distinguished himself as a member of the Liberal Union. Under President Leopoldo O'Donnell, he was promoted to brigadier general and took part in the Moroccan campaign (1859-1860). Along with the Duke of La Torre and other generals exiled to the Canary Islands, he returned to the peninsula in September 1868 to join the revolution against Isabella II. He was one of the signatories of the Cadiz Manifesto in September 1868, and took part in the battle of Alcolea , where he played a decisive role. Appointed Director General of the Infantry, he was sworn in as Captain General of Cuba in July 1869, where the first insurrection for independence had just broken out. He went to Cuba with the new intendant, José Emilio de Santos, with the mission of pacifying the island and putting an end to corruption within the administration, but he stayed only a year before returning to Spain. In 1872, he was elected Senator for the provinces of Almeria and Cordoba. In 1873, together with generals Serrano and Topete, he took part in the failed coup attempt of April 23, aimed at preventing the proclamation of the Federal Republic.
