Chased steel, partly inlaid with gold and silver
This shield, typical of Qadjar production, features a beautiful full-surface chased decoration, partially damascened in gold and silver, with floral motifs, friezes of plant motifs and cartouches, alternating with calligraphy and animals. Some of the thick silver damascened elements are finely regrained. The inscriptions are poetic ghazals. Four gold-damascened bosses take the form of flowers.
Iran, 19th century, Qadjare period.
(Some wear to the damascene).
