Frantisek dit Frank KUPKA (1871-1957) - Lot 33
Frantisek dit Frank KUPKA (1871-1957) In the garden, bouquet of peonies on a pedestal table, 1910 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower middle. (Restorations). 66 x 75 cm A certificate from Monsieur Pierre Brullé dated November 24, 2025 will be given to the buyer. Provenance : - Galerie Bailly - Private collection, acquired from the previous one in the 1980s. Today, Frantiek Kupka is considered one of the leading exponents of abstract art, even if the term will always be rejected. Inspired by the purist tendencies of the Abstraction-Création movement, of which he was a founding member in 1931, the Czech painter nevertheless evolved from realism to pure abstraction. He began his work with historical and patriotic themes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, then specialized in symbolic and allegorical subjects at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. With this oil on canvas, Au jardin, bouquet de pivoines sur un guéridon, dated 1910, Kupka experiments with the technical and emotional processes of painting from a motif borrowed from nature, probably one of the artist's last inspirations along with Bouquet de lilas, dated the same year. The brushstrokes and subject matter, however, closely resemble his oil-on-canvas Rosier en fleur. This dating makes it asymptomatic of his work from 1910, painted twelve years earlier (1899).
