DELORME (Philibert). Nouvelles inventions pour bien bastir e - Lot 54
DELORME (Philibert). Nouvelles inventions pour bien bastir et à petits fraiz... Paris, imprimerie Fédéric Morel, 1561. In-folio, 22 x 34 cm, 6 + 57 + 5 ff, 19th-century ivory paper boards, smooth spine, gilt edges.
First edition of the first French treatise on architecture.
Illustrated with 34 woodcuts in the text, 23 of which are full-page. This copy is complete with the penultimate leaf featuring the allegorical vignette of the architect, which is missing from most copies.
Remarkable Parisian humanist printing by Morel l'Ancien, who was appointed King's printer in 1579 and was notably the printer of Du Bellay's works, with his vignette on the title.
A fine copy, from the decorator and architect Armand Sigwalt (1875-1952), who owned an important collection of ornamental drawings and a fine library of selected collections (sale Paris, November 27 & 28, 1934, no. 71; stamped mark on a small engraved and colored revolutionary vignette pasted on the first flyleaf as a bookplate) and of the architect and decorator Armand-Albert Rateau (1882-1938), who decorated grand Parisian hotels and was one of the masters of Art Deco (sale Paris, January 23, 1995, no. 64; bookplate). Old handwritten bookplate scratched at the top of the title.
