Rare musical salon automaton with two tunes and nine movements featuring a West Indian merchant presenting surprise fruit on a tray. Mobile head, glass eyes. The fruits open alternately to reveal animated scenes. Gustave Vichy (1839-1904), circa 1885. (Mechanism functional but needs revision, fabric worn). Height: 63 cm The Château de Houtain-le-Val in Belgium preserves an identical automaton. Also referenced in Léopold Lambert's catalog under no. 6 "Nègre au plateau avec trois fruits mouvementés à surprises 2 airs".
