Nanto kugutsu utsuchi/ Picture of Nanto dolls (Nara)
On the left, an elderly man with a rake on his shoulder, on the right, an elderly woman with a broom: these are wooden dolls in the image of Jô and Uba, the heroes of the Noh play Takasago "The Hill of Sand", in which, as they collect pine needles, they tell how pine is a harbinger of joy. Pictures or dolls depicting Jô and Uba were very popular at the time as party or wedding gifts.
