Sugawara no Michizane
A three-wheeled imperial chariot in the shape of a temple, harnessed to an ox, is stopped on the side of the road. The ox lies between the stretchers, and the servants wait for the emperor to return, admiring the autumn-reddened maple trees. The poem illustrated in this print is by Kan Ke (Sugawara no Michizane)
from the series Hyakunin Isshu uba ga Etoki, The Hundred Poems Told by the Nanny.
Date: circa 1835-1836.

Censorkiwame seal. Red stamp slightly faded.
