Second edition. An annotated catalog of the antiquities collection of the diplomat, archaeologist and vulcanologist William Hamilton, by Pierre-François-Hugues d'Hancarville, a historian steeped in Enlightenment ideas. This work originally appeared from 1767 to 1776, in Naples and Florence, in folio format, illustrated with prints drawn and engraved by a group of mainly Italian artists.
Extensive copperplate illustrations by François-Anne David: 5 hand-colored title-frontispieces and 361 plates. Of these, more than three-quarters are heightened in ochre by hand (with occasional white), one is heightened in color, and another in gray. This engraved suite reproduces in reduction the plates illustrating the original edition.
