Important Qadjar tile with narrative scene: Shirin visiting - Lot 16
Important Qadjar tile with narrative scene: Shirin visiting Farhad. Molded ceramic with painted decoration under a transparent colorless glaze. Iran, 19th century, Qadjar period. 42 x 34.5 cm This large tile presents a scene from the poem of Khosrow and Shirin. It is the second poem composing the Khamseh (Quintet) written by Nizami in the 12th century. Shirin is here accompanied by waiters. She is visiting the sculptor Farhad, performing the impossible task of digging a road in the rock of Mount Bisutun, ordered by the jealous king Khosrow. A small Qadjar tile with a similar subject is in the Victoria & Albert Museum (inv. no. 406-1887).
