Composite creature, probably Al-Burâq. - Lot 2
Composite creature, probably Al-Burâq. Polychrome pigments and gold on paper. Kashmir or Deccan, late 18th century. 15 x 9.5 cm Provenance: Strycker collection, Belgium. In the iconographic repertoire of Indian miniature, hybrid creatures with female heads and composite bodies such as this one are traditionally identified with Al-Burâq, the composite mount of the Prophet Muhammad that led him through the skies at the Miraj. The theme of the various representations of Al-Burâq is discussed by Amina Taha-Hussein Okada in her book on composite animals: Taha-Hussein Okada A. (2017), Les Animaux Magiques Dans la Peinture Indienne, Paris: Circonflexe, pp. 35-36. A comparable miniature from Kashmir depicting a peri on a lion is held in the Morgan Library (M.787).
