United States of America - Commemorative medal of the reception of Hermann Köhl, James Fitzmaurice and Günther von Hünefeld by the City of New York, 1928, in gilt bronze showing, on the obverse the arms of the City of New York and on the reverse the legend: "RECEPTION IN HONOR OF CAPTAIN HERMANN KOEHL MAJOR JAMES FITZMAURICE AND BARON QUENTHER VON HUENEFELD GERMAN-IRISH AVIATORS COMMEMORATING THEIR TRANS ATLANTIC FLIGHT HONORABLE JAMES J WALKER MAYOR APRIL 30TH 1928", signed Dieges & Clust, ribbon worn, pin. 47 x 44 mm USA, circa 1928. TTB German Captain Hermann Köhl, Irish Major James Fitzmaurice and Baron Günther von Hünefeld made the first successful east-west transatlantic flight in a Junker W 33 aircraft named Bremen. Having taken off from Ireland on April 12, 1928, they landed the next day far north of Quebec, pushed back from their initial destination, New York, by headwinds.
