Atelier de Jules ROMAIN (Rome, V. 1492-1499 - Mantoue, 1546)
Sheet of studies recto-verso: the harpy in winged sphynge on the recto, a dog and two studies of crowns on the verso Pen and brown ink, brown wash and traces of black pencil. Annotated at the bottom "N°31 Polidoro da Caravagio" and at the bottom right, original annotations "Arpia" and on the verso "Cane". Numbered at the bottom right C132 in black pencil. (Stains and folds). 26.2 x 34.2 cm Provenance: purchased from Siden in 1975 The harpy styled for transfer Note the use of the same winged sphinx, with many variations and in reverse, in the fresco of the "Fight of the Wild Animals" in the Chamber of the Winds in the Palazzo de Te (see: A.Belluzzi, "Palazzo de Te in Mantua, Modena, 1998, ed Franco Cosimo Parrini, p.355, fig.660-661). Another drawing of a sphinx (Fondation Horme, Florence) is preparatory to the fresco of the Palazzo de Te (opus quoted above, volume 1, p.414, fig.288). It is possible that our study is a copy of a lost model used in an unknown decoration, given that a flower of foliage is superimposed on the fantastic animal. It may also be a model by Giulio Romano for the Palazzo de Te, unused.
