Mary CASSATT (1844-1926)
Study for The Cup of Tea or Tea Time, ca. 1879-1881 Oil on canvas laid down on canvas, signed with initials in the lower middle, numbered on the back 692, marked PH 77 and inscribed on a beige label with the number 8962. 39,5 x 60 cm Provenance: - Ambroise Vollard, purchased (1000 francs) - Acquired by the family of the present owners in the 1950s. Mary CASSATT (1844-1926) The daughter of a wealthy Pittsburgh banker, Mary Cassatt was an emancipated young woman who was interested in art, literature and politics, and above all, who expressed her opinions. Independent and determined, her passion for Europe and her desire to become a fully-fledged artist drove her to Paris where her sister Lydia joined her in 1875. ... It is Lydia, Mary Cassatt's sister, who poses for this painting. Portrait and genre scene overlap, for it is less the effigy of an individual than the representation of an English ritual appropriated by the ladies of the Parisian upper class of the time, and which modern painters enjoy describing, finding in it both the interest of a new subject and the description of a private space typical of the contemporary society to which they belong. Mary Cassatt often painted tea scenes which describe a "social duty", which takes place at fixed days and times in the afternoon and allows friends and acquaintances to be received for very short moments of 15 to 30 minutes over tea and cakes. ... The unfinished aspect, especially for the background, the particular framing, witness of the relaxation of the standards of composition, add to the impression of spontaneity which emerges from the painting, and are at the source of the intimacy of this scene.
