Auguste DELATRE
Moon effect, circa 1892, drypoint and roulette, 9.5 x 13.5 cm, margins 22 x 30 cm (Beraldi 112?), beautiful and rare proof printed in black. Also enclosed is a set of etchings, including two address cards for Delâtre (including B. 106), another address card for Delâtre by Roudinoff, and an address card for Hessele by R. Ranft. Together about 20 pieces. Unlike the proof preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (see in particular F. Fossier, Il Fiore del'Impressionismo, La Fleur de l'Impressionnisme, Milan, 1990, n°24, p. 218-219), this proof is printed in black. However, it is printed in a particular way, very velvety, slightly blurred, even "sauced". It is probable that Delâtre used here his "roll-up" process to give more smoothness to his print: after having inked and wiped his plate by hand, the printer would brush it with a piece of soft muslin that would drag the black out of the waists and spread it over the plate.
