ALBERT BESNARD
It is a complete suite of 26 plates, 1900-1901, etching and aquatint, various sizes, margins 45 x 32 cm (Delteil 131 to 156), very beautiful and fresh proofs of the final state with the monogram on thick vellum, all signed, edition of about twenty copies, some plates slightly yellowed. "One of Besnard's most important engraved suites is a series of twenty-six etchings on the theme of death, commissioned by the collector Joseph Vitta (1860-1942) and executed in 1900- 1901 under the title: Elle. Besnard treated the whole in an allegorical manner, since death is a skeleton that enters into the intimacy of the characters. The black, even squeaky humour of certain scenes gives them an aspect that is both fascinating and disturbing. Often linked to the theme of love, death is a theme familiar to the artist, almost obsessive" (Albert Besnard, Paris, Musée du Petit Palais, 2016-2017)
