I am deeply honored that the first act of my function is to notify you of a decision which responds so highly to the feelings of gratitude of the Country and the Army" signed Lyautey (autograph), dated December 26, 1916; the copy of the report of the Minister of War to the President of the Republic "Mr. President, The dignity of Marshal of France, provided for by the Law and which a long period of peace has suspended, could not be better revived than in favor of the General who, twice, on the Marne and on the Yser, has victoriously stopped the lightning march of the enemy armies at the moment when they thought they had reached their goal and reduced us to submit to their will.
