Order of the Iron Crown, founded in 1805,... - Lot 268 - Beaussant Lefèvre & Associés
Order of the Iron Crown, founded in 1805, brevet of Commander attributed to General Saint-Hilaire, entirely handwritten on double page, headed by the Kingdom of Italy, dated Paris March 4, 1806 "His Majesty the Emperor King of Italy, Grand Master of the Order of the Iron Crown, has just named you, Sir, Commander of this Order, as one of those who have contributed most to the winning of battles in the campaigns which founded his Kingdom of Italy and forced his enemies to acknowledge its existence at Campo Formio", signed F. Marescalchi. Rare. 31.2 x 19.7 cm France, 1806. Louis-Joseph-Vincent Le Blond, comte de Saint-Hilaire (1766-1809), general and count of the Empire. A cadet at the age of 11 in the Conti-cavalry regiment where his father served, he joined the Aquitaine regiment in 1781, was appointed second lieutenant in 1783, then left for the West Indies, became a lieutenant in 1788, captain in 1792, served in the Alps army, at the siege of Toulon, then in the Italian army, brigadier general in 1795, then division general in 1799. He distinguished himself during the battle of Austerlitz by seizing the Pratzen plateau, wounded and awarded the Grand Eagle of the Legion of Honour. He then distinguished himself at Jena, Eylau and Eckmühl. In 1808, the Emperor made him a count of the Empire. In 1809 he commanded a division under Marshal Lannes. At the battle of Essling, he had his foot blown off by a cannonball and - like Marshal Lannes - died of his wounds. His name is inscribed on the south side of the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile. Throughout the Empire, there were only 131 commanders appointed by the Emperor in the Order of the Iron Crown. BE
