His meeting with Albert Gleizes in the early 1940s marked a decisive step. Without becoming a mere follower, Coste found with him a plastic framework that guided him towards more abstract painting, based on rhythm, structure and the internal movement of forms. This proximity was confirmed by an exhibition of Coste's work presented by Gleizes in Aix in 1942, and by their joint presence in a group show in 1953.
