Andy WARHOL - Lot 114
Andy WARHOL Mao, 1974. Silkscreen, sheet 101.3 x 76 cm (Feldman & Schellmann II 125A), fine proof printed in violet and black, signed and dedicated "To M.C. Dane with Love", canvas-backed, slightly yellowed, soiling and light staining in the lower part between the collar and the dedication, small stains in the upper left-hand edge, edition of approx. 300. Marie-Claude Dane (1920-2006) was curator for the city of Paris between 1958 and 1985. She worked at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, then at the Musée Galliera, before devoting her time to the Musée de Sculptures en Plein Air du Quai Saint-Bernard, the Musée Zadkine and the Pavillon des Arts des Halles. In these various venues, she organized numerous exhibitions devoted to Dali, Larionov and Goncharova, Rothko, Debré, Cocteau, César and Mathieu. In 1974, she invited Andy Warhol to hold an exhibition at the Musée Galliera: on this occasion, the artist decorated the entire museum with over 200 portraits of Mao. This silkscreen was produced for the occasion, and was used to cover the walls on which the artist's paintings were displayed. A photocopy of the exhibition invitation and three mimeographed copies of the exhibition information leaflet are enclosed.
