Very fine micro-mosaic decorated with drinking doves, known as "Pliny's doves" after the pavement discovered in Hadrian's villa in Tivoli.
Rome, circa 1800.
In a black and gilded wood frame.
Height: 5 cm - Width: 7.5 cm
The fine craftsmanship of this micro-mosaic allows it to be attributed to the workshop of Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1836).
This refined object was one of the souvenirs that art lovers, collectors, writers and traveling artists brought back from Italy on their "grand tour".
