In the aftermath of the war, during the 1948 London Olympics, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, neurologist at the Stoke Mandeville military hospital, gave birth to the Paralympic movement by organizing a sports competition for the wounded soldiers he was treating. Taking place alongside the Olympic Games, the Paralympic Games gradually took shape, adopting their own symbols. In 2004, for example, "agitos", Latin for "I'm on the move", appeared at the closing ceremony of the Athens Games.
The Paris Games initiated a new tradition when, on August 24, 2024, the relay flame was lit in Stoke Mandeville, the birthplace of the Paralympic movement. It then travelled through the Channel Tunnel to Calais, where, divided into 12 flames, it made its way to 12 French towns, from where, from August 25 to 28, passing through the hands of 1,200 torchbearers, it made its way to Paris, passing through more than 50 towns in every region of France.
