JAPAN - Meiji period (1868-1912) Pair of lacquer boxes covered with gold brocaded silk on a brown background with dragon medallions. The ends encircled by borders decorated in gold lacquer hira maki-e with sprays of flowers and foliage for one and friezes of Chikawa môn for the other. The other sides are decorated in taka maki-e with gold, silver and red lacquer on a nashiji background of shishi. Opening on three superimposed drawers, one in each box containing a set of black ro-iro and red lacquer boxes and small gold môn. In one box, a drawer containing a writing case with ink stone and paulownia leaf-shaped mizuhire. (Detached hinges, traces of lacquer, missing parts).
