Cretan school of the first half of the 17th century The Crucifixion Tempera on panel (extensive restorations, particularly to the gold background). 42 x 33 cm Inscription, reinforced, in the form of a signature, in Greek, in the lower part. Translation: "Main Emmanuel de Lampardou". Possibly Emmanuel LAMPARDOS the elder, known as MANOLITZIS (1567-1631) or Emmanuel LAMPARDOS the younger (died circa 1644). Related work: The painting of the same subject in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, with variants. Emmanuel Lambardos (1567-1631), also known as Manolitzis, was a painter of the Cretan school, a post-Byzantine school that developed from the 15th to the 17th century under Venetian rule. His work is difficult to distinguish from that of his nephew (who died around 1644), also named Emmanuel: both painters worked during the same period in the style known as Maniera Greca.
