SALLUSTE (Caius Sallustius Crispus, known as). La Conjuración de Catilina y La Guerra de Jugurta [On the colophon:] En Madrid. Por Joachín Ibarra. 1772. In-folio, (2 of which the second is blank)-(8 of which the last 3 are blank)-(8)-395-(1) pp, spanish text in large italic characters with latin text below in small roman characters on 2 columns, red morocco, smooth spine filleted with garnet and cloisonné of gilt flowered boxes with motives of gilt antique vases, rich polychrome mosaic decoration in a gilt lace frame and on a starred background of gilt butterflies, with in the center a special gilded iron representing Remus and Romulus near the she-wolf, ornamented cuts, inner frame of the same leather decorated with a gilded lace, gilded edges, black morocco back case (A. Palomino). A MASTERPIECE OF SPANISH TYPOGRAPHY, from the Madrid press of Joaquín Ibarra y Marín, printed on an exceptional quality paper, Spanish laid paper from the factory of Francisco and Pedro Guarro in La Pobla de Claramunt. Translations of the two main texts of the first great Roman historian, by the Infante Don Gabriel, son of King Charles III of Spain, accompanied by the Latin texts edited by the young man's tutor, the philologist Francisco Pérez Bayer, with notes, and appendix on the language and alphabet of the Phoenicians. IMPORTANT ILLUSTRATION ENGRAVED ON COPPER, by several artists. Out of the text: 11 plates including a title, a portrait, a map, 2 large scenes (by Manuel Salvador Carmona after the painter Mariano Salvador Maella); in the text: 33 vignettes. SPECTACULAR EXAMPLE IN MAROQUIN SIGNED BY MADRILENE BINDER ANTOLIN PALOMINO, in 1976 according to a calligraphic note attached to the volume.
