LIAO CHI-CHUN (1902-1976) Landscape near Taipei, 1961 Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1961.01, lower right. Provenance: - Mauricio Nayberg, former Uruguayan consul in Hong Kong in the 1950s-1960s, acquired during his stay. - Paul Perez Arroyo, received from the above. - Madame X., Paris, private legacy of the previous owner in 1991. Liao Chi Chun is a Taiwanese painter, graduated from the Taipei Normal School in 1922, then attended the Tokyo Fine Arts College, where he studied until 1927. He is best known for the bold coloring of his works... Liao's studies in Japan gave him a strong background in drawing and also inspired his use of color, which takes precedence over line in creating form in his compositions, while harmony is created by the relationship between the chosen color palette and structure. Liao Chi-chun's works consist mainly of landscapes and still lifes. His early works focus particularly on scenes of Taiwan. During the 1950s and 1960s, his paintings demonstrated a bold use of color, as he began to use reds, greens, yellows and blues in his work. At the same time, the subjects of his paintings became simpler.
