Bibliography : - Ambroise Vollard, Tableaux, pastels et dessins de Pierre-Auguste Renoir, tome I, Ambroise Vollard éditeur, reproduced p. 78 under n°310 with as title and date Maisons, 1910. - Guy-Patrice and Michel Dauberville, Renoir, catalog raisonné des Tableaux, pastels, dessins et aquarelles 1911-1919 & 1er supplément, volume 5, Éditions Bernheim-Jeune, Paris, 2014, described and reproduced p. 207 under no. 3987 with as title and date "L'église du Voeu à Nice, vers 1918". In 1911, Auguste Renoir, who lived in Cagnes among the olive trees, decided to rent a pied à terre in Nice to spend the winters and benefit from the wealthy winter clientele. The apartment he rented to close friends, the Roumieux couple, was on the second floor of a building located at 1 rue Alfred Mortier. His son Claude attends the nearby Masséna high school. From the balcony of the apartment, which overlooks the Place du Voeu, he painted the roofs of Old Nice and the Tour Saint-François, a vestige of the old Franciscan convent. At the top of the hill, one can see the trees and the chapel of the castle cemetery where his wife Aline has been buried since 1915. He will join her there in 1919. Another view of the Tour Saint-François from the Roumieux's apartment is kept in the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, since its acquisition in 2010.
