Safavid style heap basin. Electroplating Europe,... - Lot 2 - Beaussant Lefèvre & Associés
Safavid style heap basin. Electroplating Europe, 19th century. Height : 16 cm Diameter : 26 cm This basin is an ancient reproduction of a Safavid Persian piece in electroplating. Electroplating is a means of reproducing an object using the principle of electrolysis. A mould connected to the negative pole of a battery is immersed in a solvent. A continuous electric current allows the metal particles in the solution to deposit on the mould in a uniform layer of copper metal. This method of making an exact facsimile of any object with an irregular surface was developed in the 19th century and used in printing and art. In the 1920s, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London acquired many electroplated copies of originals held in various major European museums. This coin has the stamped number 985720 under the base.
