Odilon REDON (1840-1916)
La grappe ou le marchand de ballons Charcoal and blur drawing, signed lower left 38.5 x 27.5 cm Provenance: - Émile Bernard, acquired directly from the artist. - Acquired from the previous one by Louis Libaude on 30 May 1906. Exhibition: 1960, Paris, Galerie Jean-Claude et Jacques Bellier, D'Ingres à nos jours, aquarelles, pastels et dessins, No. 69 in the exhibition catalogue (under the title La grappe). Bibliography: Alec Wildenstein, Odilon Redon - Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint et dessiné, Mythes et Légendes, Volume II, La Bibliothèque des Arts, Paris, 1994, described and reproduced on page 181 under n° 1099 and reproduced in full page, page 180. About this charcoal, the catalogue raisonné indicates: ... Now they are balloons that look like round moon-faced heads, unless the heads have been turned into balloons, which makes them grief-stricken, by some nasty bugger who now drags them around in bunches to show them off or sell them. Fogged with the colourful memory of the balloon sellers of our childhood, which almost gives it an old-fashioned charm, this black drawing is strangely and darkly picturesque.
