Provenance: Louis Libaude, writer, dealer and childhood friend of the artist (unmarked). This series of zincographs was produced by Emile Bernard between 1894 and 1897, inspired by the popular woodcuts known as "images d'Épinal", imitating the simple workmanship of woodcuts produced in various periods, from the Middle Ages to the Classical Age. Intended for publication (on fine paper) in the magazine L'Ymagier, edited by Alfred Jarry and Rémy de Gourmont between October 1894 and December 1896, they were also published in a deluxe edition of 25 copies on Italian laid paper. This album, whose covers are also illustrated with Bernard's plates - publication in the form of a bound album was not known until now - includes almost all of Bernard's Ymages, in a beautiful deluxe edition, hand-colored. The colours of these plates are different from those of the plates kept in the Doucet collection (Bibliothèque d'Art et d'Archéologie, Paris). The set came from Louis Charles Libaude, known as Louis Lormel (1869-1922), a writer, merchant and childhood friend of the artist, and could lead one to believe that it was a special print made for a close friend.
