The Good Song. Paris, Alphonse Lemerre, 1870. Petit in-12, (6 of which the first 2 and the last white)-38-(4 of which the last 3 white) pp., garnet morocco, smooth spine with long gilt title, thin gilt frieze framing the covers, covers preserved with a small lack on the first one (modern binding).
ORIGINAL PUBLISHING printed on account of the author at 590 copies, of which only 40 on large paper. Printed in June 1870, it could not be published immediately because of the Franco-German war and then the Commune.
AUTOGRAPH SENDING SIGNED "TO THE LISLE'S ANTEEM, a tribute of deep and sympathetic admiration, are all devoted friends..."
Leconte de Lisle thanked Paul Verlaine for this sending by a letter of August 9, 1870: "My dear friend, I received the
Good song and I thank you very cordially for your kind remembrance. YOUR VERSES ARE CHARMING; THEY BREATHE THE HAPPY REST OF THE SPIRIT AND THE PEACEFUL FULLNESS OF THE HEART. Receive my congratulations."
Luminous and appeased, this fourth collection of Verlaine's poems evokes his love for Mathilde Mauté, whom he was going to marry in August 1870.
