WRITTEN AND ORNEMANIST MASTER, CHARLES MAVELOT (died aged, in 1742), bore the title of engraver of the Dauphine (of whom he was a valet), then of Mademoiselle (the famous Anne-Marie Louise d'Orléans slinger), and finally of the Duke of Maine. Between 1680 and 1696, he published several collections of coats of arms, figures and emblems. "ALL THESE COLLECTIONS OF MAVELOT ARE OF EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY, both in line and composition, and can be regarded as the masterpiece of the genre" (Saffroy, ibid.) Provenance: ancient monogram ex-libris "AD" in ink on the title page.
