CHARCOT (Jean-Baptiste)
5 letters to Madame de Mallevoüe. 1929-[1934] and n.d. 3 autograph letters signed (1929) CONCERNING THE CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF DUMONT D'URVILLE, of which: "... It is very likely that your uncle, a lieutenant on board the "Zélée" knew my wife's great uncle Mr. Goupil who was on board this same ship as a draftsman [it is Ernest Goupil 1814-1840, and Meg Cléry, Jean-Baptiste Charcot's second wife]. Goupil did not witness the discovery of Adelie Land; he died on the return to Tasmania of the first Antarctic expedition that had enabled Dumont d'Urville to discover Terre-Louis-Philippe and Joinville. He was buried in Tasmania, and a few years ago Mrs. Scott, mother of the great English explorer, sent me a photograph of his grave which she had had restored in memory of the friendship which united me to her son...". - A SELF-POSTAL CARD SIGNED "AT SEA", with handwritten acknowledgement of receipt on July 29th, 1934, and bearing on the front a photographic view of the harbour at Tobermory in Northern Scotland. - An autograph message on business card. ATTACHED: 5 autograph letters and cards signed from Meg Cléry to Madame de Mallevoüe (1935-1942), one autograph letter signed from Commandant Charcot's daughter Monique (1938) and 2 autograph letters signed from Louis de Bonnières (1936 and 1944). With a few other documents including several press clippings.
