Adolphe Sheon in his various writings: Monticelli, his contemporaries, his influence, Pittsburgh, 1978 and in the introduction to the catalogue of the exhibition cited above, indicates to what extent Monticelli's imagination was combined with the influence of the old painters - Rembrandt - and his contemporaries - Seignemartin - and finally with the scenes seen near the mosques that surrounded the port of Marseille for the execution of his Arab scenes.
