Leon Bakst's Work for Sleeping Beauty. Paris, M. de Brunoff, 1922. In-folio, (8 including the first 4 and last white ones)-21-(3)-(4 white) pp. in-folio, green half-marble with corners, ribbed back decorated with gold fillets and delimited by cold fillets continuing on the leather of the dishes with stop fleurons, preserved upper cover bound after the hors-texte, past back (period binding). Edition of 500 numbered copies signed by Léon Bakst. Portrait-frontispiece of Léon Bakst by Pablo PICASSO dated 1922, under snake with printed legend 56 colour compositions of sets and costumes by Léon Bakst, mounted, i.e.: 54 on boards outside text under snakes with printed legends, and 2 in the text. Composed after Charles Perrault's tale, Tchaikovsky's ballet Sleeping Beauty was created in St. Petersburg in 1890 with choreography by Marius Petipa. For his Russian Ballets, Serge de Diaghilev had this original choreography reconstructed by Nikolai Sergeev and Bronislava Nijinska, and commissioned new costumes and sets from Léon Bakst. In its new form, the work was first performed at the Alhambra Theater in London from November 2, 1921 to February 4, 1922. Origin: Harriet Rozier (vignette ex-libris).
